Last weekend a crowd of 200.000+ flocked to Joetsu in Niigata to celebrate the 88th annual Kenshin Festival, where GACKT once again took on his iconic guise of the famous Warring States Era warlord Uesugi Kenshin.

Astride a white horse that has mastered the art of photobombing, GACKT/Oyakatasama regally led a procession of 400 volunteers on the departure to the front and the ensuing battle with rival warlord Takeda Shingen.

On the morning of the 22nd August, my mother took her own life.

There appear to be a lot of speculations floating around, so please allow me to write a few words here.

For a very long period of time, she was tormented by mental illness. Because of its nature, it was extremely difficult for her to receive any treatment that would require her consent, and we were perpetually troubled over what we should do about it as a family, and what the best option would be for her.

Since I was young, I have been witness to the progression of my mother's illness. With the worsening of her symptoms, her distrust of people, including her family members, only increased further, with the line between reality and her delusions getting blurred, and she came to lose control over her own behaviour. I was subjected to her emotions and actions all the time, and there was nothing I could do about it.

While I hope that she is now freed from her constant suffering, her very last deed was one that was overwhelmingly tragic, and stirs up only feelings of regret within me.

Even though she was a woman who was frequently misunderstood by others...... even though she was always very timid, she was also very strong-willed, with a strong sense of justice, always enjoyed having a good laugh, had a quick brain, was as impulsive as a child, was scatterbrained and could not be left to her own devices, and was an adorable person, more so than anyone else. Despite there being many sad memories, when I think of my mother, the image that surfaces in my heart is one of her smiling.

I am proud to be the daughter of my mother, and am full of gratitude for having been able to meet her.

I have received lots of warm, supportive words, and am reminded that I am being supported by very many people. Thank you all very much.

An update, and words of thanks

With regards to the late Utada Junko's suicide, I would like to sincerely apologise, both as representative of the agency to which she belonged to and as her former husband of 25 years, for all the trouble and inconvenience this incident has brought about to all those concerned in the various industries, to the fans of Fuji Keiko, and to the fans of Utada Hikaru. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude and thanks for all the kind words and well-wishes sent to both Utada Hikaru and myself.

As per the wishes of the deceased as expressed in her will, both an all-night vigil and a funeral were not carried out. (Translator's notes: Seems like there will only be a cremation.)

Ever since I met her, I recognised that there was some degree of emotional instability within her, but instead of seeing it as a mental illness, I simply came to terms with it by viewing her as a uniquely "whimsical" person, and perceived it as something I could deal with adequately enough.

It was when Utada Hikaru was around 5 that these emotional changes started becoming more noticeable. She would launch aggressive words and actions towards my mother, the late Takeyama Sumiko, and even Hikaru and myself soon became the targets of her attacks. However, her emotional changes were frequent, and days where she'd go, "Sorry, I've caused trouble again", and reflect on her actions a few minutes after her outbursts continued on for a long period of time. When her suffering became more frequent, she was advised on numerous occasions after being examined at hospitals to undergo appropriate treatments, but this advice instead caused her to develop feelings of mistrust towards me. In the end, I believe that her suffering became a lot graver as the years went by and she continuously refused treatment.

In these twelve years, she lived life as she pleased, going on vacations and trips when they came to her. She got an American visa that allowed her to stay in the country for a maximum of five years upon entry, and made New York her base, frequently travelling to the European countries, various parts of America, and Australia as and when she felt like it.

While living such a lifestyle, she would call Hikaru and myself regardless of the time of day and without any prior notification; while there were times where she'd ask "How're you doing?" and the conversation would continue on normally, there were also times where she'd yell at us for no apparent reason, and we were very worried about her, her mental condition speaking to us very plainly through her words.

The last time I spoke with Junko was on the 14th August this year. It was her who called me. This time, it was one of the few occasions where Junko's voice had a cheerful tone and she sounded energetic. It lasted eight minutes, including some small talk, and accepting a few requests from her, I hung up the phone. And eight days later, she committed suicide.

It is impossible to know whether Junko made an active decision to take the leap, or whether it was an act of impulse. All I can say is that I am filled to the brim with regret for having been unable to help her in her situation, and with sadness for having lost someone dear to me.

I would like to thank everyone who has watched over Utada Junko and Fuji Keiko with all their love on behalf of her. Thank you all very much.

The time I spent with Junko is firmly engraved into my memory, and will never fade away.

Indonesia hosted the first official sumo tournament outside Japan for five years on Saturday, with Kisenosato causing a major upset by defeating the sport’s two grand champions.

Thousands flocked to the opening day of the competition in Jakarta, paying up to $90 for prime seats, as the popularity of all things Japanese grows among Indonesians — from learning the language to eating the cuisine to embracing the sports.

The two grand champions or “yokozuna,” Mongolians Hakuho and Harumafuji, had been expected to dominate — but both suffered shock defeats to lower-ranked Kisenosato.

Hakuho looked to be on impressive form as he made it through successive rounds, in one bout guiding 206-kilograms Gagamaru of Georgia out of the ring in seconds.

But he met his match in the semifinals against Kisenosato, who also went on to win Saturday’s final against Harumafuji.

Kisenosato will now take part in the final of the two-day tournament on Sunday.

Before the fighting, some of the wrestlers took part in a skit which involved buttock slapping and picking up young fighters by their loincloths and hurling them around, drawing much laughter from the crowds.

“This is the first time I’ve seen sumo live, so it’s very exciting,” aikido instructor Sphinx Parlin Philips told AFP.

“This event is like an introduction to Japanese culture,” added Tukuji Yoshida, from local organiser Gotanda Denshi.

However, the sport is no longer purely Japanese, with many foreign-born wrestlers and its top rank of “yokozuna” occupied by the two Mongolians.

The last official sumo tournament outside Japan was held in Mongolia in 2008.

Sumo is gradually emerging from a series of scandals that have tainted its centuries-old image.

Match-fixing, drug use and bullying allegations have eroded its popularity, although it still has a huge following.

AKB48's 32nd single "Koisuru Fortune Cookie" (released on August 21st) sold 1,330,000 copies during the first week, and topped Oricon's weekly ranking.

This is the 13th consecutive million-selling singles (14th single in total) for the group, and now they have tied the record with B'z.

AKB48's total number of copies sold for their singles is now 23,378,000 copies, and it's the best record for a female artist.

A comment about Utada Hikaru's mother's suicide from singer Tomomi Kahala (38) recently made headlines. After Utada made a public statement stating her love for her mother despite a complicated relationship, Kahala's response has become a hot topic online.

Speaking at the Smart Beaute Project event held by hair care brand ANGFA and Mercedes Benz, the press asked for a comment on fellow singer Utada Hikaru's loss. Kahala then responded, "Her songs are so great, and she got global fame. I want her to make a song with those feelings [about her mom's killing herself.]" Later she said, "I know what it's like to be at the bottom. And after being that low I've come back shining," she said while laughing.

These comments ruffled some feathers with the public, with net users saying, "She has absolutely no delicacy," "Completely insensitive," "You hit rock bottom because you reaped what you sowed, don't compare that to Utada losing her mother," etc.

Recently the singer has been in the spotlight more, singing her classic hit"I'm proud" and making a "miraculous and perfect comeback." Since the catastrophic relationship with her lover since her debut, Tetsuya Komuro, the singer fell into mental instability, canceling appearances at the last minute and becoming addicted to heavy drugs, which have given her a negative image, even today. It was reported recently that she was naked, walking around completely unaware if her surroundings at a Max Matsuura private event, and become something of an invalid. Many credit her alleged return to sanity and sobriety to her caring parents and siblings.

Utada Hikaru, however, had an unstable home life, with her parents divorcing and marrying over and over, and despite this, Utada managed to utilize her skill and potential to become one of the biggest pop stars ever. Kahala, who in many regards is the antithesis of Utada, suggesting that she use the thoughts of her dead mother, who committed suicide by jumping off her apartment building, for a song has upset many.

Some comments included: "Are you in the position to be making comments like this?" "Why don't you think about other people's feelings?" etc.

Though it has been repeated that Kahala has made a complete recovery, many still worry that she will slip back into her habits of drugs and anonymous sex. It seems quite possible that anyone with those doubts about her mental stability may be made even more suspicious by these recent comments. The world looks forward to see if Kahala has truly wiped away the dark parts of her life and character.

It's been revealed that NMB48 will be releasing their 8th single (currently untitled) on October 2.

The single will be released in 3 different versions: Type A, Type B, and Type C. All types will come with 2 new songs. In addition, Type A will include a song by Shirogumi, Type B by Akagumi, and Type C by Namba Teppoutai Sono Yon.


NMB48's previous single "Bokura no Yuriika" took the #1 spot on Oricon's weekly ranking in its first week. With their new single, the girls aim to "make an independent appearance on NHK's Kohaku Uta Gassen."

It's been revealed that Kanjani8 will be releasing their new album "JUKE BOX" on October 16. They will also be holding their nationwide tour 'Kanjani8 LIVE TOUR JUKE BOX' starting in November.

"JUKE BOX" is the group's 6th original album, and it's also their first since releasing "FIGHT" about a year and 11 months ago. It features a variety of songs from rock, pop, folk, and dance. More details such as the track list and participating artists will be revealed later.

Kanjani8's upcoming tour will kick off on November 8th at Tokyo Dome. It will run until next year with the finale on January 19 at Kyocera Dome Osaka.

CAPSULE has announced today that their new album will be named 「CAPS LOCK」. The album is slated to be released on October 23, 2013. The 2CD in the Limited edition will contain extended mixes of certain album tracks. More info has yet to be disclosed so stay tuned!

We are excited to announce the special GUCCI x VOGUE JAPAN x Namie Amuro collaborative project.

There will be a special GUCCI x VOGUE JAPAN x Namie Amuro collaborative event at the “FASHION’S NIGHT OUT” shopping event at GUCCI Aoyama on September 7th (Sat) which is being hosted by “VOGUE JAPAN”!!

In addition, Amuro-chan will appear in the October issue of “VOGUE JAPAN”, which goes on sale today, wearing the newly announced 2013-14 women’s fall winter collection from GUCCI.

Starting today, you will be able to watch a different SPECIAL MOVIE on each of the official sites which will have scenes from this special collaborative project.

Kamenashi Kazuya, Tamaki Koji and Tabe Mikako will be starring in the NTV autumn 2013 drama "Tokyo Bandwagon ~ Shitamachi Daizoku Monogatari" which will begin its run from October at 9pm on Sundays. This is the first time in 8 years since Tamaki last appeared in a drama  and he will be playing the unconventional father Ganato of the lead character Ao (Kamenashi). The drama is based on the novel series by Shouji Yukiya and features a four-generation family operating a cafe and used books store which uses its weird family rules to resolve various unusual cases. Ganato who is actually a legendary rocker, likes to appear out of nowhere and says eccentric things with a pet phrase "LOVE dane". On the other hand, Tabe will be playing the role of Makino Suzumi, the heroine who is in love with Ao.

The ending theme song of the drama titled "Searchlight" will be sung by Tamaki and is due to be released on 27 November.

Other co-stars include Hiraizumi Sei who plays Hotta Kanichi, the grandfather of the family and Ganato's father, Kaga Mariko as the grandmother who has become a ghost and will be the narrator in the drama, Mimura as Aiko who is the elder sister of Ao and a single mother, Kaneko Nobuaki as Kon, Aoi's elder brother and a free writer who coops himself at home and Taira Airi who plays Ami, the wife of Kon who used to be a cabin attendant.

Sakai Noriko will be taking on the lead role in the new movie "Utsusemi no Mori" which is due to be shown in cinemas next year. This is Sakai's first movie appearance since she last appeared in the 2008 movie "Shinri" and was sentenced for her stimulants consumption violation in 2009. Filming was wrapped up at the end of July.

The movie features Sakai as a married woman who disappears one morning but suddenly returns home after a long time. However, her husband (Saito Ayumu) claims that his wife is someone else and the story unfolds to reveal the tragic past of this couple. Co-stars include Kanayama Kazuhiko and Emoto Akira.
