I'm excited about the track Akira Yamaoka produced, "One Shot Dealer", but I wish there were more new tracks on the album. It's been a long 12 years for the band and they're finally making their (long overdue IMO) major debut!

Rabid Japanese fans label athletes who don’t bring home a medal 'tax thieves'

With Yuzuru Hanyu taking home Japan’s first-ever gold medal in men’s figure skating, there’s a chance the country’s rabid sports fans will back off on the intense pressure they’ve been placing on the nation’s Olympic team. That’s sure to be a weight off the shoulders of the athletes themselves, as well as former Olympiad Dai Tamesue, who recently took so-called fans of the Japanese team to task for calling athletes who fail to reach the podium parasites.

Up until recently, Japan had enjoyed limited success at the Olympic Games. The country’s medal count stagnated through most of the 1980s and ‘90s, with the exception of a bump at the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles from which the always competitive Soviet team was absent.

Things started to pick up in the new millennium, as Japan earned a then-high 37 medals at Athens, followed by another strong performance in Beijing, and capped with its best performance yet in London, where the country medaled 38 times.

But Japanese athletes have been building expectations along with momentum. The Winter Games tend to be a tougher challenge for Japan, and the only time it’s reached double-digits in Winter medals was when it benefitted from the home country advantage at the 1998 Nagano Games. Nonetheless, pre-competition interviews with Japanese athletes routinely end with the reporter earnestly imploring, “Please get a medal.”

Before Hanyu’s figure skating win, some of the biggest stories from Sochi in the Japanese media were the near-misses that kept Japanese athletes off the podium. Veteran moguls skier Aiko Uemura seemed assured a medal when she captured the top spot in her event with only three athletes left to compete, only to see herself passed up by all of them.

Ski jumper Sara Takanashi also ended up with a so close yet so far away fourth place finish. Frustrated by results such as these, some Japanese sports fans decided that even if they couldn’t say something nice, they were still going to say something, airing the following grievances online.

—“Are they just there to have fun?”
—“Where do they get off using our tax money for a vacation?”
—“If you get asked for a comment after you don’t win, don’t you know the first thing out of your mouth is supposed to be, ‘I’m sorry I didn’t get a medal?’”
—“Athletes who don’t win medals are tax thieves.”
—“Why are we wasting our tax money on athletes who don’t win and have no class?”

On the one hand, this attitude is partly tied into Japanese cultural values such as responsibility and effort. As an island nation, Japan often sees itself as separate from the rest of the world, and prominent citizens who spend a moment in the limelight abroad are generally held to be, and treated as, representatives of the nation and its society by the Japanese media. “Japan isn’t spending money to send athletes to the Games just so they can make nice memories for themselves,” stated respected author Tsuneyasu Takeda, who is also the great-great grandson of Japan’s emperor Meiji.

That said, Japanese culture also emphasizes humility and not offending others, and some of these angry comments are just as over the line by Japanese standards as those of any other nation. One man has had enough of this sniping from the peanut gallery, though, and that’s Dai Tamesue. The Hiroshima native holds the Japanese record for the 400-meter hurdles, and was part of Japan’s Olympic track team in 2000, 2004, and 2008.

The 35-year-old Tamesue, who has retired from track and now serves as a sports analyst, is disappointed in fans for leveling such cutting criticisms at the Japanese athletes. The former hurdler himself has no medals to show for his three trips to the Olympics, and in his mind Japan’s lack of high-profile successes can be attributed to one simple thing: money.

“Out of the countries that disclose their Olympic team development expenditures, Japan spends the least,” Tamesue asserted while speaking to reporters from Nikkan Sports. For the Beijing Games, for example, reports show that Germany spent an amount equal to 27.4 billion yen and the U.S. 165 billion. Both host China and the UK kicked in 12 billion yen. Japan’s contribution to its Olympic team? A comparatively paltry 25 billion yen.

“We’re saying, ‘We can’t help you out financially, but you’d better make sure you go get a medal!’” Tamesue lamented. “It’s an unreasonable position to put our athletes in.”

Tamesue seems to have struck a chord with others who’ve grown tired of the angry rhetoric surrounding the Japanese team, and many voiced their approval of his stance online.

—“I’m nodding in agreement so much I think my head is going to fall off.”
—“I think it’s time we, as a nation, did a better job of understanding the unreasonable expectation we’re placing on our fine athletes.”
—“Thank you for saying this, and please keep letting people know.”

Here’s hoping that the media and public take Tamesue’s words to heart, and that they serve as a reminder that while winning is nice, the best way to represent your country is with the dignity and sportsmanship that always comes from giving your utmost effort, regardless of the final standings.

Lightning’s Story Is Truly Over, But She May Be A Guest In A Future Final Fantasy

Motomu Toriyama, director for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, was in Singapore recently to promote the latest and last entry in the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy. Siliconera stopped by the launch to catch up with Toriyama.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII just came out in the West. Prior to the game’s release, the embargo on the game’s review has lifted, and views on Lightning Returns have been a mixed bag so far, with some good reviews and a few bad ones. In your opinion, what would you say might be the cause of the mixed views on the game?

Motomu Toriyama, Dicrector: Well, I haven’t had a chance to see those reviews yet. But, personally I think perhaps the element of a time limit in this game could have been perceived as a form of restriction on the player’s freedom. In this game, the time management system is such that the player has to constantly be on the move, and take an active stance towards increasing the time limit and managing it.

And if you approach the game’s time limit in a positive manner, I think players will further understand the nuances and appreciate why we chose to implement this system. Even in Japan, what we’ve noticed is that opinions on the game become more positive after some time since Lightning Returns’ initial release [after players get used to the nuances].

The Final Fantasy XIII saga comes to a close with this game. But with that said, do you feel that this is absolutely the last tale you’ll ever tell within this universe, or do you think you might revisit it in the future? Will we ever see Lightning in a Final Fantasy title again?

For Lightning, her story ends here in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, as this game is meant as a finale to this series. But we know that Lightning is an extremely popular character, even when compared to other Final Fantasy characters.

So there is a possibility that Lightning would appear in other future Final Fantasy titles, not as a protagonist, but as a guest character.

Finally (and this is with regards to the ending in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, so Siliconera readers, you might want to come back to this part later after you’ve completed the game), although Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII was just released in English this week, the game has been out for a while in Japan.

Some fans who’ve finished the Japanese version have wondering if the final scene with Lightning in this game, actually takes place in the same real-world universe that we live in.

[Laughs] I don’t know if we should be talking about this during the launch period of the game. But this time around, since Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is the end of this series, we’ve prepared an ending of an epic scale [for the fans who've been sticking with the FF13 series].

In Lightning Returns, after the story ends, we’ve prepared a little bit of an epilogue for Lightning, where… well, we can’t really go into a lot of detail, but Lightning is seen in a rural town in a world that is quite similar to our own Earth.

And from then on, what happens… we’d like to leave that up to the users’ imagination.

Square Enix’s Yoshinori Kitase On A Final Fantasy VII Remake

ff7ac

Final Fantasy series producer Yoshinori Kitase, who also served as director on Final Fantasy VII, has once again commented on the prospect of a remake of that game, in a talk with Eurogamer.

According to Kitase,“staff availability and budget” are two of the biggest obstacles that prevent the remake from being greenlit, but there’s also another barrier in its way—Kitase’s own motivation to work on such a project.

“Even if I casually say I would like to do that, because it would be a huge project I would have to motivate myself to the level that I really am prepared to take on this huge responsibility,” Kitase said.

He continued: “I don’t know if those three things will happen simultaneously. It has to tick lots of very big boxes. I won’t rule out the possibility, but it would take a lot to make it happen. But should I ever take it on, it would have to be the biggest project I’ve done. My life work. So I would have to be as highly motivated as that to end up with something I’m very happy with. It’s a huge thing for me.”

Kitase also briefly touched upon the idea of an HD remastered version of Final Fantasy XII, saying that he isn’t aware of any such plans at Square Enix at the moment.

“It depends on the team who created 12,” Kitase said. “If they think it’s a good idea they might opt for it.”

From Osawa Takao's Official Facebook page:
"We are very happy to announce that Takao has been officially selected in the the long running historical drama series ‘Taiga’ in 2015 “Hana Moyu” broadcast on NHK."
"Takao had the following to say about his role, “Hana Moyu” is not a typical historical drama which you just follow a hero but it’s all about people who supported those heroes behind the scenes. I hope you enjoy and feel sympathy with the characters. I will try my best to work on this with the main actress Ms. Mao Inoue and all the other casts and staff."

Osawa Takao is going to take the role of Odamura Inosuke, later known as Katori Motohiko (1829-1912), a politician/bureaucrat who was appointed as the first governor of Gunma prefecture. He married Sugi Fumi (Inoue Mao) after the death of Fumi's first husband, Kusaka Genzui. Before, Odamura was married to Fumi's older sister, who passed away due to illness.Together with Fumi, he established many educational institutes in Gunma, including what possibly the first kindergarten in Japan, Kaho Kindergarten (currently known as Marifu Kindergarten).

A look at Japan's "Rabbit Island"

We all know about the Cat Island, but they have one overrun by rabbits, too. Paging Elmer Fudd...

Hundreds Of Rabbits Attack A Girl In Japan. This Is Hilarious… Although A Little Frightening.

There’s a tiny island in Japan that is so full of cuteness, if I saw it in person I wouldn’t be able to handle it. It’s known as Rabbit Island, and that is because it’s literally full of nothing but rabbits. (Surprise!) Rabbit Island, a.k.a., Okunoshima, was used as the secret base for the Japanese Imperial Army’s lethal gas operation during World War Two. You wouldn’t even guess it now, though, because the only reason people know this island is for the bunnies.

Lots and lots of bunnies.

And judging by the video below, the rabbits really like it when tourists visit to feed and pet them. After all, who doesn’t like to be fed treats and cuddled? Experiencing an adorable rabbit stampede is something I need to do before I die.

Why go to a tropical island paradise when you could go to one of the cutest islands on earth, filled with lovable new friends? Share this, maybe you’ll find someone to take the trip with you.

QueenTada talks about her future King on her radio program

On February 18, singer-songwriter Utada Hikaru (31), who revealed earlier this month that she would marry an Italian man (23), announced on her Inter FM program in her natural voice that "I will be getting married."

She thanked everyone with, "I was happy to hear the well wishes from everyone," and explained disinterestedly that, "I did not deliberately choose an international marriage.  Rather, it happened unexpectedly not to be a Japanese person who I became acquainted with, and who matches me amazingly... His family even talks dirty jokes with me. They are very lively, but also delicate which is same as Japanese people."

Her husband is a bartender at a high-end hotel in London, England and she met him last year through a friend.  The couple plans to hold their ceremony in the southern Italian city of Fasano on May 23.

Ooh we have a date now. I hope she have the perfect wedding, like she wanted. I assume it will be private and close families-friends only. Though I kinda hope she will tweet part of her wedding gown or ring :P
Wish all the happiness in the world for the lovely couple! :D
