Miyazaki's The Wind Rises Earns 961 Million Yen in 1st Weekend

Director Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's The Wind Rises (Kaze Tachinu) film sold 747,451 tickets to earn 961 million yen (US$9.66 million) on 454 screens this past weekend. It ranked #1 at the Japanese box office for the weekend, and it is expected to cross the 10 billion yen mark (about US$100 million yen).


In comparison, Miyazaki's last film, Ponyo, earned 1,575,820,000 yen (about US$14,638,000 at the time) in its first weekend.

The film starsEvangelion director Hideaki Anno as main character Jirō Horikoshi, the designer of Japan's famed Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter plane of World War II. The film also stars former idol Miori Takimoto as Naoko Satomi, as well as Hidetoshi Nishijima, Masahiko Nishimura, Steve Alpert, Morio Kazama, Keiko Takeshita, Mirai Jita, Jun Kunimura, Shinobu Ōtake, and Mansai Nomura.
