Hugh Jackman unintentionally offends locals by walking around nude in spa

When Hugh Jackman was filming for his latest movie The Wolverine in Japan a few months ago, he unintentionally caused a minor incident at a Japanese spa when he walked around nude, not knowing he was supposed to cover his privates.

While visiting a traditional spa at the foot of Mount Fuji, the Australian actor was unaware that the small towel he was handed when he entered was actually meant to be worn around the waist to cover up. Instead, he used it as a washcloth to wipe his face with cold water when he was already getting hot (pun not intended). He noticed a lot of people were staring at him, but he thought it was because he was the only white person in the whole spa (and it never occurred to him that people were staring because he’s a big Hollywood star!). It wasn’t until a fellow customer pointed at his own towel and his private parts, miming what he was supposed to do with the cloth, that he realized his cultural blunder. “I’d spent about an hour just waltzing around this place with this thing in one hand and a beer in my other!” the 44 year old actor exclaimed.

The Wolverine is set to open in the US and UK on July 26, but has no release date yet in Japan. Several Japanese actors co-star in the movie, including Hal Yamanouchi, Will Yun Lee and Rila Fukushima. A number of Japanese locations also figure prominently in the story and in the production, particularly Omishima Island, Tomonura and Tokyo.
