Today it was announced that Go Ayano will star in Mipo O’sSoko nomi nite Hikari Kagayaku, the second feature film based on the work of late Hokkaido-born novelist Yasushi Sato.
In addition, it was revealed the Chizuru Ikewaki will play the heroine and Masaki Suda will play her younger brother.
The original novel was released in 1989, a year before author Sato committed suicide at the age of 41. Sato’s name was often listed as an Akutagawa Prize candidate, but he never managed to win one before his death. Back in 2010, Kazuyoshi Kumakiri became the first director to adapt Sato’s work with his award-winning film Sketches of Kaitan City. Many filmmakers had previously expressed interest in adapting the novel before Kumakiri eventually took on the project, and now O will get a similar opportunity.
Like Kumakiri, O is a graduate of Osaka University of Arts. In 2010, she won the Kaneto Shindo Award for her film Here Comes the Bride, My Mom! which helped establish her as an up-and-coming film director.
In the new film, Ayano plays a young man named Tatsuo Sato who quits his job and goes through life aimlessly until he meets a wild, yet friendly youth named Takuji Oshiro (Suda) in a pachinko parlor. He later goes to Takuji’s home, which is a shack where he lives with his bed-ridden father, his mother who spends her time looking after the father, and his older sister Chinatsu (Ikewaki). Tatsuo finds himself charmed by Chinatsu’s ability to “shine” in spite of being stuck on the bottom rung of society.
Filming of “Soko nomi nite Hikari Kagayaku” begins in Hakodate on June 26 with cinematography by Ryuto Kondo (Sketches of Kaitan City, The Kirishima Thing). Ryo Takada (Cannonball Wedlock, The Ravine of Goodbye) handled the screenplay.
The film will be released in Japan in spring 2014.
