On May 18th, 'Soshite Chichi ni Naru', starring Fukuyama Masaharu, was screened at the “66th Cannes International Film Festival”. Main cast members, including Fukuyama, Ono Machiko, Maki Yoko, Lily Franky, Ninomiya Keita, Hwang Shogen, and the director Koreeda Hirokazu walked on the red carpet.
On the red carpet, all male cast members including two child actors appeared in black tuxedos, while Ono wore a long pink dress, and Maki appeared in a purple dress.
Fukuyama said at the press conference before the screening started, “This is my first time coming here in Cannes. I have my hands full with interviews and things since in the morning. I would be frustrated with this kind of schedule in Japan, but I can stay calm here which may be because of this location. I wish I would be able to stay as calm as now in Japan too.”
Other cast members also left a comment, “This is my second time in Cannes. It’s not easy to come here no matter how hard you work. I’m truly happy to be able to come here together with everybody for this movie.” (Ono), “I’m excited and happy to be able to come to Cannes! This time, I will experience this atmosphere, and I want to come back here again for sure!” (Maki), “Cannes is more brilliant than I expected, and exalts me just by staying here. I couldn’t even sleep, so I stayed at the restaurant alone to drink more, after everybody else left. I’m just happy that we were all here together including the director.” (Lily)
It was reported that after the screening, the casts received a standing ovation from the audience for about 10 minutes. Fukuyama explained, “I was deeply moved to tears. In addition to the affection toward the movie itself for watching it on a big screen, it was also because of the standing ovation. My tears were not really for myself, it was more like, ‘congratulations, Koreeda-san!’ I usually don’t cry except for acting, but this time I cried for joy to see the standing ovation for the director.”
Ono also said, “I’ve never been impressed in this way before. Watching the standing ovation made me even more touched that Japanese culture and way of thinking could be understood by people overseas. This red carpet is the place you can shine in Cannes. It’s a reward for myself for working hard until today. (Just like my dress), even my heart is now in pink!”, while Maki shared her thoughts with, “Receiving the standing ovation, my impression is steadily increasing. Once again, I’m happy that we’ve created a work together. The red carpet is the place I long for, but it also makes me nervous. However, as the child actors are also here, I’m glad that we could walk on it holding each other’s hand with warm feeling.”
